Antisemitism at qu news package

Timeline: December 2023

The war in Israel and Gaza broke out in October of 2023. Since then, antisemitic acts across America have been happening more frequently. Specifically, universities have been facing controversy for their responses. At Quinnipiac University, multiple swastikas have been found on campus. I shared this news in a package meant for a news broadcast.

Research

For inspiration before starting my news package, I found some others that do a good job of telling a story.

This package about business development in Hartford, CT is very well produced. The reporter takes the audience through a story, giving news about businesses coming to a city through real people. This makes a viewer feel connected to the story. The visuals are also intriguing and there are a variety of unique camera shots used.

This is a heartfelt package about a Harvard student who started her own organization that donates to cancer. It tells her incredible story of how she started then features a high school community who had jumped in to help. The way the reporter ties the emotional interviews into her script makes the audience feel connected and like they want to help. In addition, it is clear multiple cameras were used to get the best angles and shots for interviews, which makes this look like a highly produced, professional piece.

the Process

To begin the package, I had to plan who I was going to interview, where the information was coming from, and what visuals would be needed. More about this can be found in this planning document.

To make this package, I conducted two interviews. One was with the university’s rabbi and the other was with a Jewish student. I set up three-point lighting on the interview with the student. I also took various shots of campus to match the writing in my script. That way the visuals would correspond to what the narration is talking about.

conclusion

Making packages is a passion of mine and something I want to pursue in my career as a news reporter. Although this is a difficult topic to cover and the university would not do an interview, the experience making this content was enjoyable.
